Shopify script tag checker
On March 1, 2027, Shopify stops loading script tags on online stores. Enter your store address to see which app scripts still depend on them. No app install and no login needed.
What is changing
Script tags are an older way for apps to add JavaScript to a Shopify storefront. Shopify has announced two dates:
- October 1, 2026: apps can no longer create or update script tags. Existing ones keep running.
- March 1, 2027: Shopify stops loading script tags on online stores. Anything that depends on them, such as a widget, popup or tracking script, stops working. The page shows no error.
Apps are expected to move to app embeds (theme app extensions) or web pixels. Source: Shopify developer documentation.
How to use the results
- Find the app. We guess the app from each script's address. If there is no guess, the address usually contains the vendor's name.
- Ask the vendor. Use the email template in the results to ask whether the app has moved to an app embed and what you need to do.
- Turn on the replacement. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds, and switch on the app's embed if the vendor tells you to.
- Check again. Run this checker again after the vendor updates the app. Shopify notes that while both the old script tag and the new embed are active, the script can load twice, which can double-count analytics.
Limits of this check
- It only reads your homepage. Script tags limited to other pages or to the order status page will not appear.
- App names are guesses based on the script address and can be wrong.
- Stores with a custom (headless) storefront, password-protected stores, and stores that block automated visits cannot be checked.
- It cannot tell whether a vendor already has a replacement ready. Only the vendor can confirm that.
Common questions
Is this an official Shopify tool?
No. It is an independent free tool and is not affiliated with Shopify.
Do I need to delete old script tags?
According to Shopify, leftover script tag records have no effect after March 1, 2027. What matters is whether the feature has a working replacement before then.
My store shows no script tags. Am I done?
For your homepage, very likely yes. If you use apps that only run on product, cart or order status pages, ask those vendors directly.
